Some weddings are defined by grand gestures. Others are defined by meaning. Emma and Dom's beautiful July wedding at North Luffenham Church was very much the latter.
Family, tradition and intentionality sat at the heart of every decision they made. Nothing felt excessive, and nothing felt chosen simply for appearances. Instead, every detail had a purpose, creating a celebration that felt deeply personal and wonderfully authentic.
Their vision for the day was refreshingly clear from the beginning: relaxed, elegant and natural. They wanted flowers that felt wild rather than formal, curated rather than structured, and beautiful without ever feeling overdone. As a florist, those are often the most rewarding briefs to receive. The result was a timeless palette of white and green, filled with movement, texture and scent, perfectly suited to both the historic church setting and the couple's understated approach to wedding planning.
A Church Filled with Family History
North Luffenham Church was never simply a wedding venue for Emma and Dom.
For generations, members of Emma's family have been married there, making it a place rich with memories and significance. Long before wedding planning began, this church was already woven into the story of their family.That history brought an added layer of meaning to the day.
Steeped in tradition and surrounded by the timeless beauty of Rutland countryside, the church provided a setting that felt both grand and familiar. It was the perfect place for Emma and Dom to begin this next chapter together.
Because Emma lives some distance away from the area, much of our planning took place through WhatsApp messages, Zoom calls and occasional visits whenever she was able to return home.
Despite the distance, the process felt incredibly collaborative. Emma had a strong sense of how she wanted the day to feel, and whilst she knew exactly what she didn't want, she also placed a huge amount of trust in the creative process. That trust became one of the defining elements of the project.
Creating Natural Beauty Within a Historic Setting
One of the biggest priorities for the flowers was ensuring they felt at home within the church.
Historic churches are beautiful spaces, but they can sometimes feel imposing or a little dark, particularly on overcast days. As it happened, the weather on Emma and Dom's wedding day was far removed from the sunshine many couples hope for in July.
Grey skies hung overhead, and rain seemed to threaten throughout much of the day. Yet in many ways, that weather made the flowers even more important. The white blooms reflected light around the church interior, bringing brightness and softness to the space. Rather than fighting against the architecture, the flowers worked alongside it, enhancing the beauty that was already there.
From the moment guests arrived, they were greeted by carefully placed floral designs and foliage draping that softened the stonework and introduced a sense of natural movement.
One of our favourite styling details was the foliage woven around the church windows. The greenery gently softened some of the harder architectural lines and helped blur the boundary between the church and the landscape beyond. The effect was subtle but transformative. It brought a touch of nature indoors and perfectly reflected Emma and Dom's desire for something relaxed and organic.
White and Green: A Timeless Combination
For their wedding flowers, Emma chose an elegant palette of white and green.
Classic, romantic and endlessly versatile, this colour combination allowed texture, scent and movement to take centre stage. One flower that was especially important to Emma was freesia.
Chosen for its beautiful fragrance, it added another sensory layer to the day and brought a softness that guests could experience beyond the visual impact of the arrangements.
We also incorporated white delphinium throughout the designs, a flower that has long been associated with joy and new beginnings. Their delicate spires introduced height and movement while reinforcing the light and airy aesthetic we were aiming to create. Together with carefully selected seasonal blooms and abundant foliage, the flowers felt fresh, natural and perfectly suited to the setting.
Nothing felt overly formal. Nothing felt rigid. Instead, every arrangement appeared as though it had naturally settled into place.
Framing the Moments That Matter Most
One of the key design principles behind this wedding was creating flowers that framed important moments. Rather than filling every available space with flowers, we focused on enhancing specific focal points throughout the church. This approach allowed each design to have purpose and impact.
Guests were welcomed by flowers as they entered. Foliage softened the windows and surrounding architecture. Pew end flowers guided the eye through the ceremony space. Most importantly, floral arrangements positioned near the altar helped frame Emma and Dom during the most significant moments of the ceremony. These became some of the most visually impactful designs of the day.
Beautiful wedding flowers should never distract from the couple themselves. Instead, they should support and elevate the experience. The altar arrangements did exactly that, creating a beautiful backdrop whilst ensuring the focus remained where it belonged.
The Bouquet That Captured Everything
While the church flowers created wonderful atmosphere, there was one arrangement that stood out above all others. Emma's bridal bouquet. For me, it perfectly captured everything about the wedding.
The bouquet balanced wildness with elegance, combining natural movement with timeless styling. It felt romantic without becoming overly traditional and relaxed without losing refinement. Every stem seemed to reflect the couple's vision. It was curated but never controlled. Intentional but never forced.
A bouquet that felt entirely personal to Emma. One of my favourite photographs from the day shows her walking down the aisle, bouquet in hand and smiling from ear to ear. That image captures the spirit of the entire wedding beautifully.
Trusting the Process
One of the things I appreciated most about working with Emma was the level of trust she placed in me.Whilst we discussed ideas, flowers and overall direction throughout the planning process, she ultimately gave me creative freedom to interpret her vision and bring it to life. That trust is something I never take for granted.
Every florist knows that flowers often look different once they leave the studio and arrive at a venue. Scale shifts. Light changes. Spaces feel larger or smaller than expected. This wedding was no exception. As we installed the flowers throughout the church, small adjustments were made to ensure each arrangement felt perfectly balanced within the space. Those finishing touches are often what transform a beautiful arrangement into one that feels completely at home within its surroundings.
A Warm Welcome at Barnsdale
After leaving the church, celebrations continued at The Barnsdale. One of my favourite moments from the entire day came during the morning flower delivery there.
There is something incredibly special about handing a bride her bouquet on the morning of her wedding. Amidst all the logistics and planning, it becomes a brief moment of calm before everything begins. Seeing Emma, surrounded by excitement and anticipation, was a lovely reminder of why wedding floristry is about so much more than flowers.
It's about people.
It's about stories.
And it's about helping create memories that last long after the final stem has faded.
A Wedding Built on Intention
What made Emma and Dom's wedding particularly memorable was its simplicity. Not simplicity born from compromise, but simplicity born from confidence. They knew what mattered to them. Family mattered. Connection mattered. Creating a warm experience for their guests mattered. Everything else flowed naturally from those priorities. There was no pressure to follow trends or create moments purely for social media. Instead, every detail was chosen because it held meaning. That authenticity could be felt throughout the day.
From the family church that had hosted generations of celebrations, to the natural foliage draping that reflected their love of the wild and unruly, every element felt genuinely connected to who they are as a couple.

Set against the backdrop of a church filled with family history, surrounded by loved ones and illuminated by soft white blooms, this was a celebration rooted in everything that truly matters.
