Real Weddings Series by Rutland Florals

Some weddings stay with you long after the last bucket has been emptied and the final stem has been packed away. Ada and Chris's beautiful July wedding at Barrowby Church was one of those weddings.
Elegant, personal and timeless, their celebration was a wonderful reminder that the most memorable weddings aren't necessarily the most extravagant. They're the ones where every detail feels meaningful, where guests are genuinely at the heart of the day, and where the atmosphere is centred around joy rather than performance.
From the moment we first discussed flowers, it was clear that Ada and Chris wanted their wedding to feel relaxed whilst still creating beautiful visual moments. They weren't interested in following trends or creating something simply for photographs. Instead, they wanted flowers that would frame the day, complement the historic church setting and help create a warm welcome for everyone attending.
The result was a romantic palette of soft pinks and delicate blues that felt perfectly at home on one of the hottest days of the year.
A Village Church Filled with Character
Nestled in the heart of the village, Barrowby Church provided the perfect setting for Ada and Chris's ceremony. With its historic features and traditional architecture, the church already possesses a quiet beauty. Rather than competing with the building, our floral designs were created to enhance its character and feel as though they belonged there naturally.
The couple had chosen the church because of its close connection to family and its importance within their local community. That sense of familiarity and belonging shaped many aspects of the day and helped create an atmosphere that felt welcoming from the moment guests arrived.
And what an arrival it was.
The first thing guests saw as they approached the church was the floral installation adorning the lych gate. This became one of the defining floral moments of the wedding and set the tone for everything that followed.
Creating Impact in All the Right Places
When Ada spoke about her flowers, one word came up repeatedly: impact. Not impact for the sake of it, but thoughtful floral moments that would help frame the experience of the day.
One of the things I loved most about working with Ada was the trust she placed in me throughout the process. Having worked countless night shifts in the run-up to the wedding, she had more than enough on her plate, yet from our conversations she was able to communicate exactly how she wanted the day to feel.Rather than becoming caught up in every individual flower choice, she trusted me to bring that vision to life.
That creative freedom allowed us to focus on the moments that would have the greatest effect.
The floral installation over the lych gate became the centrepiece of that vision. Soft foliage tumbled naturally across the structure, creating movement and softness against the historic stonework. Layers of pastel pink and dusky blue blooms were woven throughout, creating a design that felt romantic, abundant and completely in keeping with the setting.
Paired with matching milk churn arrangements, the flowers welcomed guests into the celebration before they had even stepped inside the church. One of my favourite moments from the entire wedding was watching this installation come together. There is always a point during an installation where individual stems stop looking like flowers and begin looking like a design. Watching that transformation happen against the backdrop of the church was incredibly rewarding.
A Colour Palette Made for Summer
For Ada and Chris's wedding, we worked with a delicate palette of pastel pink and dusky blue.
The combination felt effortlessly romantic whilst remaining timeless and elegant. Avalanche roses provided softness and structure, their beautiful blush tones bringing warmth to the arrangements. Stocks added texture and fragrance, whilst oxypetalum introduced those beautiful powder-blue notes that became such an important part of the overall colour story.
Together, these flowers created arrangements that felt fresh, airy and perfectly suited to a July wedding. One of the things we particularly loved about this palette was how naturally it sat within the surrounding landscape. Nothing felt forced or overly styled. The flowers seemed to settle into the environment, complementing the church and village setting rather than competing with it.
The overall effect was understated elegance at its best.
Traditional Flowers for a Traditional Setting
Every wedding deserves flowers that reflect both the couple and the setting. For Ada and Chris, the floral designs leaned into the traditional nature of the church ceremony while still feeling fresh and contemporary.
Alongside the bridal bouquet, bridesmaids' bouquets and buttonholes, we created ceremony flowers that enhanced key areas within the church. Particular attention was given to the font, where foliage was used to create softness and connection between the architecture and floral elements.
One of my favourite details was the collection of small bud vases containing delicate delphinium stems on the signing table. Sometimes it is the smallest details that carry the greatest personality.
These simple arrangements reflected Ada and Chris perfectly. Thoughtful, elegant and unfussy, they added a gentle touch of colour whilst allowing the significance of the moment itself to remain centre stage.

Working Through a July Heatwave
Of course, no wedding is ever without its challenges. What I will undoubtedly remember most about Ada and Chris's wedding a year from now is the heat.
The day was gloriously sunny, but with temperatures soaring and the lych gate and milk churn arrangements positioned in direct sunlight, flower care became a priority throughout the installation process. Roses in particular can be vulnerable in intense heat, so careful planning was essential.
We kept the flowers hydrated right up until the final possible moment before installation and regularly misted the arrangements to help them remain fresh and beautiful throughout the ceremony.
These are often the behind-the-scenes moments that couples never see, but they are an important part of wedding floristry. Every wedding presents different challenges, and finding solutions is all part of ensuring the flowers look their best when it matters most.
Thankfully, all the preparation paid off.
The Great Flower Turnaround
One of the practical benefits of the milk churn arrangements was their ability to be reused later in the day.Following the ceremony, we patiently waited for photographs to be completed before making our move.
Like floral ninjas, we slipped into action and carefully relocated the arrangements from the church to the village hall, allowing the flowers to continue playing a role in the celebrations.Repurposing ceremony flowers is something we always encourage where possible. Not only does it maximise the impact of your floral investment, but it also allows guests to enjoy the flowers throughout different parts of the day.The churn arrangements looked just as beautiful in their second setting and helped carry the visual story from ceremony through to reception.
A Celebration Built Around People
What stood out most about Ada and Chris's wedding wasn't a particular flower or installation.
It was the atmosphere.Every detail of the day felt personal. Every decision felt intentional.
There was a genuine focus on creating an experience that guests would enjoy rather than simply creating a beautiful event to be photographed.
Ada had clearly worked incredibly hard to ensure everyone felt welcomed, included and celebrated alongside her and Chris. That generosity of spirit ran through the entire day and created an energy that was impossible to miss.
There was laughter, warmth and a sense of ease that made the celebration feel wonderfully authentic.
In many ways, the flowers reflected that same philosophy. Beautiful but never showy. Impactful but never overwhelming. Designed to create moments of joy rather than moments of attention.
A Couple's Kind Words
Nothing means more to us than hearing how our couples felt about their flowers after the wedding day. Following their celebration, Ada and Chris left the most wonderful review:
"Where do we even start? Angela at Rutland Florals is an absolute flower queen! From the very first moment we saw the church, it felt like walking into a romantic dream. The baby blue and baby pink blooms were pure magic – soft, delicate, and oh-so-beautiful.
Angela didn't just decorate our day; she created a love story with flowers. Every detail was thoughtful, every arrangement perfection. The venue looked breathtaking – elegant, timeless, and straight out of a fairytale. We had guests saying, 'These are the prettiest wedding flowers we've ever seen!' and honestly, we couldn't agree more."
Reading words like these is always incredibly special and reminds us why we love what we do.

Final Thoughts
Ada and Chris's wedding was a beautiful example of how thoughtful floral design can elevate a celebration without ever overpowering it.From the floral welcome at the lych gate to the delicate touches inside the church, every design was created to support the atmosphere they wanted to create: elegant, personal and timeless. Most of all, it was a celebration centred around people, connection and joy.
And on a scorching July day in the heart of a village church, surrounded by soft pink and blue flowers, that is exactly what it became.
Congratulations, Ada and Chris. It was an absolute privilege to play a small part in your story.
